The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Edinburgh funds postgraduate study for exceptional young Africans who have shown leadership, overcome barriers to education and want to make a positive impact, particularly on climate and sustainability.
Important: new application process for 2027/28
Edinburgh changed the process this year:
- Applicants had to attend a mandatory virtual information session held between 15 and 24 September 2026 to be considered
- Eligible attendees learn on 13 October 2026 whether they have been invited to apply
- Invited applicants complete a short first stage, then the Scholarship Main Application, which closes on 19 November 2026 at 5:00 p.m. UK time
- Do not apply for your degree programme first. The scholarship application comes first, and awardees (announced March 2027) are then invited to apply for their programme
If you did not attend an information session, check the official page to see whether any route is still open before you spend time on this.
What it covers
- Full funding for a one-year on-campus master's degree or an online postgraduate diploma
- Participation in the wider Climate Leadership Programme, including online workshops, coaching and support
Who can apply
- African applicants who will have completed an undergraduate degree by 19 November 2026
- Candidates who have faced significant barriers to education or early career opportunities
- Applicants who show leadership, community service and a commitment to creating positive impact
- Applicants who qualify academically for admission to one of the eligible Edinburgh programmes (generally a UK 2:1 equivalent or higher)
